There used to be tea rooms
in department stores.
A woman would go downtown
in a close-fitting dress or suit
and move purposefully
through the aisles of commerce.
When respite was needed,
she would ascend an elevator
to…the mezzanine, perhaps.
She would float to a table,
unfold a linen napkin,
and select from the menu
chicken à la king
and fruit salad on lettuce leaf.
As a fountain sprayed softly
or a piano played sweetly,
she was restored.
